Ugatuzi is an initiative of SODNET's innovation programme (Infonet). It enables citizens to track and monitor national and sub-national budgets. "Ugatuzi" is swahili word for Devolution.

Sample image SODNET launched the Open Budget Index (OBI) Report in February of 2009 in Nairobi inviting participants from Uganda, Sudan, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Kenya. The Index is a measure of the level of accessibility of the budget to the citizen.

Conspiracy against pupils at Kibera Primary School

Citizen’s report through the HUDUMA initiative on misuse of donor funds has given the greatest possibility to restore acceptable sanitation standards at Kibera primary school. SODNET’s recent visit to the school made public that in 2010 the Australian High Commission donated funds, through FOAD to rehabilitate a block of toilets in the school. The process involved acquiring a storage water tank, installing a water cistern and water pipe system as well as constructing an efficient drainage system.The rehabilitation process was substandard.

Action at the Frontline 2012

SODNET as the National Coordinator of Views from the Frontline was recently part of the East and Southern African Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) strategic planning at the African Centre for Disaster Studies (ACDS) in Potchefstroom, South Africa. VFL 2012/2013 picks up lessons from VFL 2007 and 2009 to build an action-oriented strategic plan -Action at the Frontline.

Huduma Strengthens Citizen Participation in Health Care

Citizens have a better opportunity to demand for quality, affordable and timely public services when these demands are directed to the person responsible. Under the Huduma initiative, doctors and other public health care providers, will respond to citizen concerns, complaints and suggestions hence holding duty bearers accountable.

Souls and Systems-Religious leaders Take up Huduma to re-order systems in Society

Religious leaders not only have a duty to re-order the souls of their flock but also the systems in society. This is according to Pastor Edward Muri of St. Andrews PCEA and lecturer at Daystar University during Huduma meet-up with pastors working in Nairobi and members of the Organization of the African Instituted Churches.

Grant Awarded to SODNET

It’s widely acknowledged that the Kenyan government has been something of a trailblazer when it comes to open data and transparency. The Social Development Network (SODNET), a Kenyan NGO dedicated to fighting the causes and consequences of poverty and disempowerment, has worked consistently to use this data to improve the lives of ordinary citizens through its Infonet programme.

Social Watch 2012 Report

About SODNET

SODNET is an indigenous organisation, established by Non-governmental Organization (NGOs) workers from Kenya as a facility for reflection and action by local groups on causes and consequences of poverty and disempowerment of communities. It aims at facilitating effective strategic alliances among interested people’s and social movements to influence policy-on issues of social development, in particular on resource management, globalisation and information.
